REMOTLEYCLOSE is about the happiness and sorrow of migrating, leaving home and reinvention elsewhere. The artists contemplate both ‘home and away.’ Is ‘home’ simply made by adding together time + safety + familiarity as the geographer Yi Fu Tuan tells us? The question of how people turn a foreign space into a known place or a home is embedded into most of Furque and Eastaugh’s work.

From letting loose in the loungeroom to enthralling audiences on stage, this exhibition celebrates dance and dancers. Capturing the beauty of movement, self expression and connection, the works on display in Dancer were collaboratively curated and choreographed by the National Portrait Gallery together with a group of local dancers.

‘My Journey’ is a collaborative project involving Year 10 students from Clontarf Aboriginal College and pre-service teachers from Notre Dame University each year. The students share their journeys and therefore, are sharing the spiritual connection they have to their country, expressing and exploring their kinship structure from home, and the cultural practices that are celebrated with their families. Individuals is the fourth local exhibition held by the DADAA Print Group, having also taken part in community arts projects and exhibited collaborative works interstate. The group create their art work in the Coach Studio at the Geraldton Cultural Trust, with perfectly-suited facilities including a spacious studio and two large printmaking presses.

Peregrinations of a Citizen Botanist is an immersive and finely crafted installation by Susie Vickery which takes the form of a cabinet of curiosities, charting the journey of the 18th Century French botanist Jacques-Julien Houtou de Labillardière, who came to Western Australia in 1792 on the ship Recherche, captained by Bruni d’Entrecasteaux. OPENING NIGHT 8 JULY 2022 - Southern Forrest Arts is currently working on a collaborative presentation of a state-wide series of regionally based, interconnected, exhibitions and performances held in mid to late 2022, culminating in a survey of contemporary regional art practice at John Curtin Gallery (Perth) in September-November 2023. Open Borders’ is an exploration of the burden and blessing of demarcation. Inspired by Western Australia’s unique experience of containment during the Covid-19 pandemic, ‘Open Borders’ prompts state-wide reflection (across all nine of WA’s regions and metro Perth) upon the role of borders, and their impact upon our lives.
