On behalf of Art Collective WA, the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery is proud to present new works from Olga Cironis.
Olga Cironis is an award winning multidisciplinary artist with a practice that spans over 20 years. Since graduating with a Master of Visual Arts from SCA University of Sydney (1996) Cironis has exhibited widely throughout Australia.
Explored in her diverse practice are the murky undertones of history and memory and the impact of these upon personal and shared identity. Within Cironis’ work are layers of research, collected stories, muted voices and cultural heritage. Her work is psychologically loaded with meaning, provoking and seducing the viewer, navigating them through history and inviting them to question our social and environmental connections.
In this current series ‘You Made Me Do It’, Cironis seeks to disrupt the innocence of childhood while highlighting the tainted road to adulthood seeped in social and cultural markings. Intentionally confronting this work forces us to question the space between self and other and how we are in the world.
Utilizing children’s dolls, lace and natural materials such as feathers, bone, shells and rocks, Cironis envelops the Dolls in camouflage fabric sourced from military uniforms. Recognising that Camouflage was designed by artists for war and based on camouflage found in nature this series symbolizes both war and peace, a disturbing lament for one’s inevitable loss of innocence.
