Works to refurbish the interior of the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery have recently been completed to enhance the A Class Exhibition spaces and welcome the co-location of the Geraldton Visitor Centre to the facility.
Opened in 1907, this historic, heritage building has seen many changes over the last 114 years. Once the most important civic landmark in Geraldton, this building served as the Town Hall and venue for many community functions, including dances, concerts, theatre and films, including a particularly vibrant period during World War II.
In the 1980s, the old Town Hall survived demolition due to community action, and in 1984 the Geraldton Art Gallery was opened, later becoming the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery.
Long term residents will recall the Geraldton Tourist Bureau was also located at this site during the mid-1980’s. The return of the Visitor Centre to this iconic site has seen a steady rise in the number of visitors who have been enjoying the Gallery. New exhibitions (both travelling and local) are installed on average every 8 weeks and the Gallery Shop has been increased in size to allow more opportunities to promote local creatives.
Refurbishment works were assisted by grant funding through the Regional Exhibition Touring Boost managed by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, supported by Royalties for Regions and delivered by ART ON THE MOVE.
