Digital art will be centrepiece at the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery (GRAG) this month as the National Photographic Portrait Prize and Arlo Mountford’s Deep Revolt launches.
Now in its 12th year, the National Photographic Portrait Prize is a touring exhibition from the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra and features stills from leading portrait photographers.
Video installations, kinetic sculptures and animations form Arlo Mountford’s Deep Revolt and throw a light on the relevancy of visual arts in today’s world. The exhibition has been described as “amusing”, “strange” and “laden with references from art history and pop culture”.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said he was sure the exhibitions would draw a crowd.
“The Midwest is home to many photographers, video producers and art-lovers who I’m sure will be eager to attend opening night,” he said.
“It really is wonderful that we can celebrate different art forms and artists from around the world here at GRAG.”
The National Photographic Portrait Prize had a whopping 3,000 entries and only 39 photographs made the cut into the exhibition. It is supported by the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program as well as the Australian Government.
Deep Revolt is a Goulburn Regional Art Gallery exhibition toured by Museums and Galleries of NSW. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.
Both exhibitions will launch this Friday 26 July at 6pm and be on showcase until Saturday 31 August. Members of the community are invited to attend the launch where light refreshments will be provided.
