On behalf of Art Collective WA, the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery is proud to present new works from Angela Stewart.

Angela Stewart has pursued an interest in portraiture for more than three decades, leading her to study the history of portraiture and its contemporary practice in both her Masters and Doctorate at Curtin University, Western Australia.

In this series of work Stewart’s non-representational paintings make reference to technical process of Renaissance painting. Citing Dutch master Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675), who’s paintings often held multiple versions beneath the surface, Stewart’s paintings contain spaces and mistakes that are pushed back and brought forward through the many layers of oil paint and glaze. Stewarts work invites you to look closer, through these layers of opacity and transparency to find an intimacy with the act of looking itself.

Stewart has exhibited extensively throughout Australia as well as internationally and has been acquired by a long list of private and public collections.
