Mid West Art Prize 2014 - deferred until 2015

Important Announcement for all Artists – Mid West Art Prize

The Geraldton Regional Art Gallery is on the improve!

The City of Greater Geraldton is in the process of upgrading the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery’s building fabric and collections space to maintain its ‘A’ grade gallery classification, improve its landscape setting as part of the northern end of the Chapman Road/Marine Terrace cultural precinct, and demonstrate commitment to sustainable and environmental design.

In recent months the first stage of this refurbishment has realised the replacement of the asbestos roof. The next stage, to be completed between December 2013 and March 2014, will be the replacement of the air-conditioning system that is currently close to failure.

The exciting news is that once the replacement of the air-conditioners is complete the Gallery will retain its ability to attract exhibitions of the highest calibre from State, National and International sources! (Loud cheers!)

However, this crucially important work will have an impact upon the Gallery’s schedule of events during the first quarter of 2014 – including the eagerly anticipated $45,000 Mid West Art Prize.

With all the work to be done, there are many variables and risks to consider and the team at the Gallery, with the full support of the Mid West Art Prize sponsors, the Art Gallery of WA and City of Greater Geraldton, has decided that it would be best to defer the next Mid West Art Prize to 2015.

This skip in 2014 will not only allow for the completion of this vital stage of the refurbishment but also a thorough cleanup of the building’s interior and exterior thus providing the City of Greater Geraldton with one of the best regional gallery’s in the country.

We sincerely trust that all our patrons and exhibiting artists will understand that this has been a very difficult decision to make, but ultimately it will lead to much better facility that will last for generations to come.

The Gallery will remain open during the installation of the air-conditioners, so please call in to view our exciting array of travelling exhibitions and works from the City of Greater Geraldton Art Collection.
