Located in the heart of Geraldton and is housed in the former 1907 Town Hall, the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery opened as the first regional ‘A’ class venue on 6th August 1984 and in 1997 the building was listed on the State Register of Heritage Places in Western Australia.
The Gallery has undergone significant upgrades and refurbishments during the course of 2014 including the replacement of the aged climate control system to a new open loop Geo Thermal system, removal of asbestos, re-configuration of exhibition spaces, creation of collection management and store facilities, installation of a new display system and a thorough clean up and repair of the interior and exterior. This refurbishment project will ensure that this wonderful community facility will continue to operate as an A Class venue for at least the next three decades and beyond.
The Geraldton Regional Art Gallery is jointly funded and operated by the City of Greater Geraldton and the Art Gallery of Western Australia. The Gallery houses and cares for the City of Greater Geraldton Art Collection which is comprised of over 475 artworks, principally paintings and works on paper.
The City Collection was initiated in 1959 with a bequest of 39 artworks to the then Town of Geraldton by Western Australian philanthropist, the late Sir Claude Hotchin. The collection today boasts works by local and West Australian contemporary artists as well as historically significant works by Norman Lindsay, Robert Juniper, Howard Taylor, Hans Heysen, Elizabeth Durack and more.
The Gallery aims to meet the artistic and cultural needs of Geraldton and Mid West residents as well as state, national and international visitors and boasts an annual schedule of some 15 exhibitions of the highest calibre accessed from local, state, national and international sources. The Gallery also launched the $45,000 non-acquisitive Mid West Art Prize in 2011. This exhibition, open to artists from throughout the State, is now an eagerly anticipated event in the State’s calendar of cultural activities. View our website for more details.
